Quality Management System (ISO9001:2008) for Construction Companies
No one can deny the significant contributions of the construction industry in the establishment and development of the socio-economic structure of the Philippines. The central objectives of any construction project are improvements in quality and reduction in time and cost. Hence, in order to complete an infrastructure project efficiently and effectively, a construction company needs a quality management system that serves as a guide to ensure that the projects are completed within the constraints of time and cost without compromising on the quality. Over the period, building projects are largely becoming more complex and clients demand the highest standards of quality. Therefore, adoption of management quality system has now become more of a necessity and not merely a option for construction companies.
A large number of construction firms and corporations throughout the world have obtained ISO9001:2000 QMS certification to show their clients that they are capable of meeting their demands and expectations. Adoption of ISO 9000, however, has not been as prevalent in the construction industry as compared to the manufacturing industry.
In the Philippines, a study was conducted by Mapua Institute of Technology at Laguna to assess the adoption and implementation of ISO9001:2008 by SME construction companies. The result of that research showed that most of the SME-based construction firms and companies in the Philippines are not aware of the existence of that ISO let alone its adoption and implementation. There was a strong implication of the lack of initiative by the construction industry in training, exposing and pushing ISO for adoption by SME-based construction firms to improve their competitiveness and sustainability.
After that study, the implementation of ISO9001:2008 in the construction industry began expanding, more so in SME in the Philippines. The ISO is based on eight management principles:
Leadership
Process Approach
Customer Focus
Involvement of people
Fact-based decision making
Systematic approach
Continual improvements
Mutually-beneficial supplier relationships
QMS (ISO9001:2008) enables continuous improvement of an organizations’ systems and processes; and have particular relevance to SME construction firms. However, SME owners need external funding to implement such system.
